Old Bastard Weightlifting #3 (Take a Break Damn It!)

Buzz prepares for our weekly staff meeting,

Hey you Old Bastard Weightlifters: (OBW):
I ain’t working out today. I ain’t. You know why I ain’t? “Cause I ain’t stupid.
That right working out too much, as you get up in age, is a bad deal. For we iron pumpers north of 50 the rest days ARE JUST AS IMPORTANT as pumping days. That’s right. Giving you muscles a chance to recover between workouts builds as much strength as working out, http://weight-lifting-complete.com/rest-and-recovery-from-workouts/.Here is an article about rest.
Although the article doesn’t talk specifically about rest for OBW adherents, the general rule I’ve seen is between 24 to 48 hours. So I generally do that. Here is another article http://www.livestrong.com/article/374066-how-much-rest-between-workouts-for-muscle-growth/.
There is some debate about rest periods between sets of exercise. I have to confess that I don’t give that much thought as I strive to make my workouts as aerobic as possible and often use super-sets. Even so Men’s Health suggest 60 to 75 seconds between sets. Here is an article they have on the topic. http://www.mensfitness.com/training/build-muscle/importance-rest-periods.
There are things you can do if you want to be a gym rat and go pump more days.
Divide your body up in parts, Do your upper body one day, lower body the next.
Vary you workouts. Pump iron one day, play tennis the next.
Do Pilates one day, mountain biking another and Pump iron the third.
The important thing is don’t pump too often and don’t wait too long between workouts.
Remember, we didn’t get to be OBW’s because we’re stupid or reckless. We got to be OBW’s because we love to lift and not spend time at the ER.
